Scriptures on growing in the character of Christ: Romans 12. Ephesians 5
You can think and behave like Jesus Christ. Tens of scriptures show that believers are called to display the character of Christ. The most notable ones include Ephesians 4:23-27 and Ephesians 5. Also, Romans 12 requires us to offer our bodies as living sacrifices and to go through a renewal process. In essence, God expects us to conform to the character of Christ.
What does conform mean?
The Greek word for “conform” is syschematizo and means “being molded according to a pattern.” In the context of Romans 12, conformity means that we are to avoid being molded into a worldly pattern. Instead, we are to undergo transformation. Obviously, the transformation is to become like Christ. As believers, conformity means that we display a character resembling Christ.
Is transform the same as conform? Are we to transform or conform?
Transformation has to do with changing something into another, while conformity is taking the shape of another object and often focuses on the outside. The word transform is metamorphoo, and it means “being changed from one thing into another.” This Greek word is transliterated to render the English word metamorphosis, used to describe the transformation of a caterpillar into a butterfly. With this understanding, we can now paraphrase Romans 12 and say: “Do not be shaped into a world object, but be metamorphosized into Christ-like character.”
Does conformity suggest a change in behavior?
In Psychology, conformity actually means changing one’s behavior and belief to fit or match that of a larger group, and it often comes due to pressure. Therefore, I posit that when Paul asks us not to conform to the world but to be transformed, he also wants us to conform to the character of Christ. In other words, conformity is incomplete without a behavior change, yet behavioral change is a consequence of a change in belief. No wonder Paul says that transformation, which culminates in conformity, is only through renewing the mind. Paul does not explicitly ask us to change our habits here, but he knows that a change in belief results in changed conduct.
Why conform to the character of Christ?
Conformity is a sign of maturity– When we start conforming, we prove our understanding that Christ wants us to be like Him. It is like discovering and becoming what your father has always desired of you.
Conformity proves our surrender– As explained, conformity occurs through pressure. Therefore, we prove our complete surrender when we start becoming more like Christ. Besides, Paul uses the term “living sacrifice” to signify surrender. In the OT, a living sacrifice ended up dying on the altar. By using this word, Paul is asking us to surrender, which is only evident when we resist worldly patterns and give in to God’s will instead.
Conformity enhances our harmony with the Father– When Jesus said that He and the Father were one, He meant that there was uniformity and agreement of thoughts and ideologies (John 10:30). There was no discrepancy. Likewise, the more we grow like Christ, the more harmonious we become with Him. This harmony also makes it possible for us to know the Father’s will over our lives.
It is only through conformity that we can reflect Christ to the world– In Ephesians 5:1-2, Paul asks us to imitate God by walking in love, just like Christ did to the extent of offering His life as a sacrifice. The best way we can be like God is by loving others.
How do I conform to the character of Christ?
- Yielding- Based on the meaning of conformity, the process would entail giving in to God’s power. Although we are not passive partners in this process, only God can transform us. In fact, the NLT bible says, “Let God transform you.” Therefore, the first step to becoming like Christ is yielding, which happens when we obey the promptings of the Spirit. It is the greatest sign of humility.
- Increased time with the Holy Spirit– Conformity requires a change of priorities. More time must be spent interacting with the Holy Spirit than pursuing carnal things like watching movies and other activities that have no spiritual value.
- Developing a new values system– Once God has transformed us, we should develop values and standards to match our new character. Without this, we will relapse to old habits. This system may mean saying goodbye to movies and anything else the Lord may require you to avoid.
